How frequently are recurring donations receipted?

As a courtesy, every January/February, we can send out annual consolidated receipts for your recurring donors.

Unlike one-time donations, recurring gifts do not automatically receive an e-tax receipt. Instead, the raisin system can be set to issue a consolidated annual receipt for organizations processing recurring gifts through the Donations modules. This is a free service, and part of your raisin subscription. Receipts across campaigns are reported in Analytics and exported to your CRM.

Opt-in process

We know that some organizations prefer to receipt on their own, so in January we reach out and give you the option for us to issue annual receipts to your recurring donors.

Once we've received your confirmation to issue your annual receipts, then we'll let you know the date the receipts will be issued - typically in late-January or early-February. We will not issue receipts unless we hear from you and receive your consent. 

In 2025, receipts for eligible donors who gave in 2024 will be issued on February 5, 2025. Receipts will be available for reissue until May 30, 2025 (end of tax season).

Note for Canadian charities:

On January 23, 2025, the Canada Revenue Agency and federal government clarified their respective positions on the proposed extension to 2024 tax eligible donations in a communique and draft legislation.

As it relates tax receipts, the CRA indicated that regular receipting practices and reporting does not change. They also addressed consolidated receipts specifically:

A charity or other qualified donee is not required to issue official donation receipts specific to the extension period. However, it may wish to do so as a courtesy to its donors, if they generally receive only one annual receipt for multiple donations.

What does this mean for annual receipts issued from raisin?

Recurring donors who contribute in January and/or February 2025 are not mandated to receive a tax receipt for the 2024 tax year. Issuing a receipt for these months is a business decision for you as a charity.

On this basis, we will not be making any changes to the courtesy annual consolidated receipt service we offer each year.

If you opt in for raisin to issue 2024 receipts: Donors will be receipted for donations made in the 2024 calendar year (January 1 - December 31, 2024).

Next year: Recurring donors will receive a consolidated receipt for all gifts made in the 2025 calendar year (January 1 - December 31, 2025).

One-time donations: Donations made in January and February 2025 are unaffected, and it’s up to donors which tax year they wish to claim these gifts (as is also true today with rollovers).

How can issue a partial receipt for recurring donors?

The decision to issue tax receipts for recurring donors between January – February is discretionary. If you wish to do so as a practice or upon donor request, there are a couple methods of doing so manually:

  • In March, create and confirm an Offline Donation with a tax receipt for the partial amount donated in the first two months of 2025. After doing so, be sure to “Cancel” the recurring gifts in raisin so that they are not included in next year’s receipt run.
  • Using your CRM, issue a consolidated receipt outside of raisin for either: Gifts received between January 2024 – February 2024, or just for January 2025 – February 2025. If the latter and if you intend on opting in next year, “Cancel” the corresponding donations in raisin after they’ve reconciled.

Receipt delivery

When sent, recurring donors will receive the event “Tax Receipt for Recurring Donors (Issued Annually)” Message Template with your branded PDF e-tax receipt attached containing their Name, Address, Cumulative Donation Amount, and with Donation Date set as the year they contributed.

The attached receipt will use the event-selected template and inherit the year in which all donations were made as the Gift Date. Here's a sample:

Data & reporting

All receipt information will also be associated to the original recurring gifts in reports, and will be re-exported with the receipt information.

Reporting on recurring donors

Looking for all of your recurring donations in a given time period? Our Analytics platform features a pre-built "Recurring Donors Report" that lists all recurring donors in your account. Date, Frequency and Fund filters are readily available, alongside all other Filters and segmentation options.

To access the Report:

  • Head to Analytics in your account
  • Choose Reports in the top menu
  • Select the Recurring Donors Report

Reporting on tax receipts

Similarly, tax receipts information can be retrieved in Analytics across a number of reports and dimensions. For simple reporting on receipt, transaction and donor information, we recommend the Transactions Report.

By default, this Report does not include Tax Receipt Number, but it's quick to add using Personalization.

  • In Analytics, go to Reports
  • Select the Transactions Report
  • Select the three dots ()  in the bottom right corner to activate Personalization features
  • Click the table and select "Edit"
  • The Chart Builder will open

  • From the Data panel on the left-hand side, drag Tax Receipt fields into the Column Shelf
